The building is beautiful and well laid out. I didn't realize how large it would be when we booked. The baths were exceptional--I was able to sit in the open-air bath and watch snow fall around the mountains. I would also highly recommend walking to their sister property (a very short and peaceful walk through the neighborhood) and enjoy the baths there. Dinner and breakfast were buffet style and very well done. I enjoyed breakfast more than dinner, but everything was well presented and there were so many options. We did not partake in the sake bar area, as we didn't feel very confident with our Japanese for truly understanding the menus and styles available. There was no English menu we were made aware of. The room was comfortable and clean. The layout was switched from a sitting area to the sleeping setup during dinner.
The bathroom in our room was absolutely freezing. The sleeping area was comfortable and we had a heater we could control, but the bathroom and shoe area was cold the entire time. In addition, the shower water also took a long time to heat up and never got very hot. Not a complaint, but there was almost no English signage for directions on either property. I had enough basic kanji knowledge to get us where we were going, but it was a bit of a maze. Their website also mentions that it's a short walk from the Higashiyama-Onsen station, but it seems like a pretty dangerous walk. We got lucky that another couple called the shuttle and they were willing to pick us up there. Otherwise, the Aizu Buke Yashikimae is the station they will pick up from.
Staff were extremely accommodating and exceedingly lovely. The rooms were really nice and the entire hotel gave a truly authentic Japanese experience.
Whilst the breakfast was nice, there wasn't any western options and after 5 days this became a little tiring, but definitely not a deal breaker. What is a deal breaker, however, is that they will not let people into their onsen with tattoos, and whilst this is semi common in modern Japan, it's 2020 and many other onsen have relaxed this rule for that reason. As a paying guest of the hotel, you really should be allowed to use the onsen, no matter the markings on your body. They own multiple shuttles but do not run a shuttle service into town at night, nor will they pick you up or drop you off at the train station on arrival and departure.
overall the stay was good but the price was quite expensive for one night+breakfast. Usually it is what we pay for a ryokan half board. the hotel is quite old and not luxurious but the staff is great, really helpful. The Onsen on the 10/F has one indoor and one outdoor space and is good. the breakfast is a buffet and it was so so (if you are not japanese). the japanese type room is spacious.
the price and the breakfast could be better. At least put some breads for non japanese.
Room and baths were very good. Also breakfast was outstanding. I really recommend for anybody to visit this place.
The property was beautiful and Onsen amazing. The food outstanding.
only thing I will say is location a little off the beaten track and shuttle won’t pick you up from the Aizu train station
